Mentoring in Action: WEAVE Interns Lead a Successful Guest Lecture

03.04.2025

We believe that mentorship is a key part of learning. That’s why we’re especially proud of Anna Kulesza and Maximilian Hechl, who, with the support of Anja Gaiswinkler, led an engaging guest lecture for the IES Study Abroad students.

Anna Kulesza and Maximilian Hechl, who are doing their internship with us in the WEAVE project, gave a guest lecture to the IES Study Abroad students. They were supported by another intern, Anja Gaiswinkler, and it was a great success—we are incredibly proud of them!

Anna shared insights about her studies at the University of Vienna, Faculty of Psychology, and, as a student originally from Poland, she provided a valuable perspective on what it’s like to study abroad. She introduced the university’s structure and led a discussion comparing higher education in Austria and the U.S.

Max, who works in a social-therapeutic residential care setting, presented an overview of the mental health support system in Austria. He then engaged the IES students in a discussion about the similarities and differences between mental health care in Austria and the U.S.

After their presentations, the students participated in an interactive activity where they designed a brand-new university or healthcare system, considering real-world challenges such as budget constraints. This led to a stimulating discussion about whether educational and healthcare systems align—specifically, whether the training students receive prepares them for the demands of the real world.

We believe mentoring is key to professional and academic growth. With the guidance and support of their mentor, Dr. Ekaterina Pronizius, our interns are encouraged to take on leadership roles, share their expertise, and gain valuable teaching experience.

This guest lecture was a perfect example of how mentorship fosters confidence and learning, benefiting both presenters and participants alike. We are thrilled with how the event turned out and proud of Anna and Max for their excellent contributions!
